Cols VX220 Turbo
A record of my VX220 Turbo VK05XEU. How it arrived and what I have done!
VX220 Turbo 2005
Purchased in April 2019
I sold my cherished Celica GT4 and set about getting another V220. This time a turbo. I looked at one local to me, wasn't quite what I wanted then this popped up just the other side of London. I went and saw it and knew from the off, it was for me.
When I Bought It
It already had some mild tuning done to it when I picked the car up. Early Vauxhall service history, more recently by Back on Track in Guildford. I planned to service it myself ongoing though
Remap
Rabbid Remaps taking it to 223bhp
Rabbid Remaps are well known amongst the Vauxhall VXR community and with this car having the Z20LET engine it was prime for being mapped. The map is smooth and consistent and adds about 15% over standard
Exhaust, Suspension, Wheels
Some good purposeful mods came with the car
3" Chris Tullet Exhaust makes for good airflow and great sound of course. The airbox has been drilled to add a bit of induction noise too. The car has had the suspension from an Elise 111r put on it. 17" Compomotive MO wheels sit on each corner and coloured black
Interior
"Biscuit" or beige, really wasn't my ideal interior
It came with the original beige interior. The leather felt well worn and hard and the colour, well, for some its a dream but for me its a bit grim, it just made the car look dated and old.
Everything else
Some nice smaller touches too
It had powerflex front and rear engine mounts, up-rated bulbs in the headlights anda VW wiper relay for if I wanted custom wiper intervals
Since I Bought It
It was in good condition when I got the car but I had my own ideas on how it would move on. In particular I wanted to work on the interior which was feeling all 15 of its years
Seats and Door Cards
A complete retrim for the interior to black and blue
I scoured the internet for a company to do the work but settled on a guy who had rave review called Ross who was well known to the forum. He kindly picked up my seats and door cards and drove off with them, a week later I had these back in my car. Absolutely stunning seats, half leather half alcantara with blue contrasting stitching. Door cards done in blue alcantara
Covering Bare Metal
A forum member selling precut carpets
The exposed metal of the interior although shows how focused these cars are also makes for a perfect reverberation chamber! So I fitted a carpet set to the interior to make it a bit more liveable. Additionally I added a layer of alcantara to the inside of the roof, the extra lining works wonders for insulating but also makes the interior again look so comfortable
Steering Wheel
To complete the interior
I thought I could get away with just doing the seats and doors, but I ended up getting the steering wheel completely retrimmed too. As well as getting matching black leather and blue stitch gaiters for the handbrake and gear stick. I added a Momo Air gear knob which matches the steering wheel as well as getting a carbon fibre sleeve that goes over the gear stick just to tidy it up, small things make all the difference
Gearbox Breather Mod
Nice cheap little mod to prevent oil spillage
A common mod for the VX is that the gearbox breather is just a small nipple on the side right next to the rear nearside tyre! So any overflow and oil goes on the tyre, not good. So added a home made mod of a pipe and filter to allow it to still breath but not spray the oil over the car
ICE
Head Unit and speakers
The car came with an older unit, possibly the OEM unit! For some reason no sound was coming from the tweeters (an option for the turbo) and the rear speakers were pretty much useless. The rear speakers sit in a shallow recess behind the seats so not many options, in the end I picked this little lot up and got it installed
Engine Bay
Splashes of carbon
The expansion tanks on these cars are exposed to UV rays under the grille of the rear clam so they are prone to cracking. One way to prevent this is a cover, I picked up a carbon fibre one from the forum. I also plastidipped the coolant cap as well as the oil cap blue. Additionally carbon wrapped the coilpack cover and put in new rocker cover bolts
Big Service and Radiator
Had to get the front clam off for a big job!
I noticed that the radiator was leaking. The plastic ends on the OEM rad are known for leaking, and if they go, it can be catastrophic. So ordered a Coolex rad and Elise Parts Hoses, along with a tonne of service parts, a Type116 front tow post, Elise Parts rear tow eye. Took the front clam off and spent all day replacing everything.
The Rear Toe Link Conundrum
Expensive maintenance job, but decided to do it
There is a common chat that goes around the VX community around the rear toe links. Those owners tracking regularly have had theirs done, as its said OEM ones are prone to fail. I dont track the car so ummed and urred but in the end relented and invested my hard earned into a set of uprated toe links from Elise Parts and got them fitted
Leaky Headlights
Home DIY job but its so bloody fiddly!
Headlights were allowing some water in so decided to have a go at resealing them. Taking them off the car is a doddle, finally an easy job on the car! I then got the lens off of the casing and set about painstakingly removing the residue. I used butyl tape to reseal and they are back on the car
Dash Refurb
It had faded and needed going back to black
Removed the dashboard as the alcantara had faded badly in the sunshine. Bought some black dye and set about colouring it back, much improved and very happy that it all bolted back in place without any bother!
Battery Replaced
Only lost a little skin!
The notorious battery replacement. The old one had been in there 5 years and was going dead within a couple of weeks of a recharge so went for a Yuasa replacement, with slightly more cranking amps than I needed but also with a handle on top and it slightly narrower than OEM for ease of install and removal!
Rear Alloy Diffuser
Great bolt on option for the back of the car
The VX220 comes with a cut out shape at the back, like it was meant to have a diffuser there but they forgot to add it from the factory! I invested in a diffuser from Ultimate Carbon, made of Aluminium, and bolted it on, it looks great!
Modern Side Repeaters
An easy mod, sequential side repeaters
I want a black and blue theme on the car, so these smoked side repeaters were a great option, with the added bonus of being sequential LEDs too!
Car Care
I am a car detailing fanatic
I spend a lot of time cleaning and caring for my cars, I have a DA polisher for the proper work but also have a weekly care routine
Bodywork Auto Finesse Avalanche snow-foam, followed by a clay and decontamination. For shampoo I have settled on Gyeon Bathe+ which is a brilliant hydrophobic shampoo cleans well and lays down extra protection. I generally use Scholl S20 Black as a go to polishing product, but have used lighter and harder polishes from Gyeon and Menzerna. I started by using Fusso Soft99 wax recently to test out its longevity, previously I was totally wedded to Victoria Concours Red but that has discontinued, will try their new line out as soon as Im out of the Fusso stuff. I purchased a load of Car Chem products recently in a fire sale and got some nice metal polish which keeps visible parts like the exhaust looking shiny. For the roof, I have A303 car kit which consists of a cleaner and sealant which is incredible at beading. For the headlights I have Gtechniq ceramic coating to keep the UV at bay
Wheels and Tyres wheels are treated regularly to Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel to decontaminate, then Bathe+ to clean. I use a wax to help maintenance and keep brake dust from bonding with the wheel surface. Tyres are scrubbed down with a good old fashioned brush and debris removed, with obligatory black to make them look new
Interior as the inside of the car is literally brand new I have invested in a hand held cordless vacuum to keep dust and dirt at bay. I have Gliptone leather cleaner to keep the leather free of as much grime as possible
